Advice- Part 3

More advice on what to eat at college, how to stay healthy, and how to deal with professors.
HEALTH

The world and your academic career won’t end if you take one personal day. We all have mornings where you’re just too dead to function. Just don’t make it a habit.Your health is way more important, but you pay way too much for those classes.

Workout when you’re stressed. It makes you feel so much better, especially when you’re really mad.

That also includes walking and swimming. I don't really except hardcore exercise from anyone, it's way too exhausting and involves effort.

If your campus has a free gym, you should use it as often as you can. You will be happier. Especially if that gym has a pool.

If you want to lose weight, have a work out buddy and motivate each other.

The Health Clinic on campus is there for a reason. Use their services.

Take time for yourself. Organize your closet, clean your room, watch TV, play Dark Souls, blow bubbles. Have a one-person dance party. It’s nice to be alone sometimes.

Schedule showers and laundry days because YOU WILL FORGET.

PROFESSORS

Go to your professor’s office hours. Shoot them an email before you go, so they'll be expecting you. Or if they’re not available, they’ll reschedule a time when you can meet. They will remember that you’re trying to improve and they WILL know your name. Sometimes asking them for help turns a failing grade into a passing grade.

Also keep in contact with professors after you take their class. You WILL need a letter of recommendation sooner or later.

If you know that you’re going to miss class. EMAIL YOUR PROFESSORS. AS SOON AS YOU KNOW YOU’RE NOT GOING. They will appreciate this and will be more likely to help you catch up if you have a legitimate reason to miss. They understand people get sick. They would rather not be exposed to the flu, trust me. If you get a good opportunity, like an interview or a trip to Germany for educational reasons or an awesome lecture from that one girl on the Big Bang Theory, SEND AN EMAIL. Heck, if you have hardcore exams coming up and a project due, they will understand. They are aware you have work for other classes.

Don’t be afraid to ask a professor to explain a concept you don’t understand.Personally, I wouldn’t ask it in class. See if they can explain it to you after class or make an appointment to talk to them or something like that.

If your professor does something that offends you, you have the right to complain. The money students pay to attend college is basically their paycheck. Report it when your professor is morally or ethically failing. Don’t complain about someone because the class is tough or challenging. If a professor is sexist, classist, racist, bigoted, or doesn’t even teach, you need to report it. You deserve a proper educator.

FOOD

Always go where the free food is. The longer you're in college, the more you will understand why I just said that.

Always have comfort food with you. Too many times have I been severely depressed and not had money for chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream. And my window faced Dairy Queen down the street.

You’d be surprised how often you forget to eat. Always have food with you for lunch if you don’t have a lot of time to eat between classes. You don’t want to be in the middle of the lunch rush. Check the syllabus to see if professors allow you to have food during their class.

It’s okay to get food alone. It’ll feel embarrassing and awkward at first, yeah. But you’ll start to like being on your laptop and eating Fruity Pebbles with no one bothering you. Going to the gym alone is the same thing, too. Though with significantly less Fruity Pebbles.

Don’t forget to drink water. A lot of times when you think you’re hungry, you’re actually dehydrated. The Freshman 15 is real. Drink a glass of water before you head to that buffet.

If your dorm has a kitchen, use it to cook a meal. You will get tired of school food sometimes.

Remember to eat fruits and vegetables. I hate to sound like I’m your mother, but they will give you more energy than that waffle drowned in syrup and butter. And…it’s just good for you. You’ll feel healthier.

If your campus has a waffle maker and a school is visiting campus, protect that thing at all costs because someone will try to break it. That was the scariest experience of my life.
